Broadcasting - Refers to the airborne transmission of electromagnetic audio signals (Radio) and audiovisual signals ( Television) that are readily accessible to receivers.

Radio Broadcasting - made responsible with the invention of the telegraph & telephone. Started as a means of communication of military, ships & naval fleets. This was used during WORLD WAR I

1918 GOLDEN AGE OF RADIO

~First Commercial Radio Station was KDKA owned by Westing house Electric Corporation. they used radio for entertainment to entire public to buy a radio.
~ American Telephone & Telegraph Company (AT&T) was the first to broadcast paid advertisements.
* 1922- 60,000 household
* !929- 10 million
* 1934- 20million

Paul Julius Gottlieb Nipkow was a German technician and inventor. He invented the Nipkow disk, one of the first successful technologies for television transmission 1884

 Philo Farnsworth- US for all electronic television system in 1927
* 1930 - age of TV broadcasting
* 1939 -  New York Fair unveiling of the television set
* 1980 - Cable television was release .. 600 -1040 stations reaching 98% of the households

Radio has four advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages: High Frequency , Local Coverage , Low Cost/ Production, Low Cost of radio
Disadvantages: Language/ Listeners, Audio Only, Fleeting Message ,Clutter



Television has five advantages and four Disadvantages

Advantages: Mass Coverage, High Reach, High Prestige, Impact of sight , sound & motion, Moderate cost per thousand exposure.

Disadvantages : Selective, High Cost of television, High Production Cost, Short Message Life
